Sewing Co-op Project

2016 Update

Kristi and Jean arrived in Fond Des Blancs on May 6. Haiti is experiencing political turmoil because of no President in office. there are "manifestations" which to us are demonstrations.  One of the activities of a manifestation is to let the air out of the tires of the cars that cannot get through the crowds. We were fortunate not to experience this.

Uniform Project

May 6,2016 Kristi and Jean returned to Fonds Des Blanc to visit the sewing school. the school had a contract with the local school, St. Andre to provide uniforms for the students. The Missionary committee of the First Methodist Church of Grand Junction generously donated the funds to provide the maetrials needed for the uniform project.

July 2014 Sewing Project

Kristi and I returned in July 2014 for a week. A little warm, I might add! There were 9 students and the same 2 teachers. The ladies have progressed in sewing skills. Kristi continued classes to include installing zippers, making button holes on the machine, making collars for uniform shirts, and sewing uniform pants. Kristi taught all of that in 4 days! The women were attentive and they all came each day. Every morning before the women start sewing, they pray and sing a hymn……it brings peace to the room.

The women had made some shopping bags and head bands, hoping they could sell them….however more practice is needed. A shop in the airport at Port Au Prince is willing to sell items that the women make, but only if they are perfectly finished. Pray for increased skills!
We were able to buy fabric in Port Au Prince and it seems to be the same quality as we have in the US ….made in China and less expensive than the US! We can buy sewing accessories there also. This makes our project easier as we do not have shipping expenses….we only need money to purchase the items!
There is one school so far that is willing to buy uniforms from our ladies! We are excited about that!
Our goal is to fund the sewing school for two years and hopefully the women will then be sufficiently skilled in making the uniforms to be self-sustaining and profitable!

Fond des Blancs, Haiti

On January 31 2014, two containers arrived from “Help Haiti” in the USA, with supplies for the new sewing school in Fond des Blancs. Two volunteers (Jean Paradis and Corky Terry) worked for a week unpacking the containers and setting up the machines and chairs in the classroom in Digue. They also unpacked fabric and thread.

Sewing Machine Project Goal/Plan

The Plan: To ship a 20 foot sea van container to Fond Des Blancs Haiti containing twelve new nonelectric Janome sewing machines, twelve Singer Treadle sewing machine bases, 1920 era cast iron bases, adjustable stools, thread and a large quantity of fabric.

Fonds Des Blancs Sewing Project

Roger The Amazing

In the summer of 2010 I visited a small village called Fonds des Blancs. It is about 3 hours west of Port au Prince. Tom had visited the village two years before and suggested I see it. Back in the day it was a fertile farming community, but the young people left to go to Port Au Prince and so the village has few families and no farming and no jobs. The earthquake had happened in January of 2010; on the way to FDB we passed many tent cities.
